kaushik: Bjp head of state opposes Seer, close contest likely | Dehradun News

Haridwar: The stage is set for a close contest over the seat of the city of Haridwar, as the BJP lined up its state party leader Madan Kaushik, who is also a four-time MP from the region, while the Congress has gave the ticket to the local seer, Satpal Brahmachari, former chairman of Haridwar Nagar Palika (now nagar nigam), whose tenure as head of the civic body won him supporters from all parties. Brahmachari is considered to have an image of his own and is expected to put up a tough fight against Kaushik, who faces anti-incumbency.
It is the second time that Brahmachari, a popular Congress face in Haridwar known to have a grassroots support base, has won the party ticket. In fact, when another seer, Brahmaswarup Brahmachari, got the Haridwar City Headquarters Congress ticket in 2017 instead of Satpal Brahmachari, many were disappointed. “It made it easier for Kaushik to win,” said a disgruntled BJP worker from Haridwar who did not want to be named.
In 2012, when Satpal Brahmachari was opposed to Kaushik in the seat, he lost, but significantly reduced the latter’s margin of victory compared to previous assembly elections. In 2007, Congress pitted Purushottam Sharma against Kaushik and Sharma lost by over 28,000 votes, which was the highest margin of victory that year. In the next elections in 2012, Kaushik won again but this time by a margin of only 8,000 votes. In 2012, when Congress aligned Brahmaswarup Brahmachari, Kaushik won by a whopping 35,000 votes.
According to residents, even if Kaushik can deal with anti-incumbency, there are several factors in his favor. He was a minister twice and held important portfolios. Ravi Dutt Sharma, a local RSS employee, said, “Kaushik has done a lot for the city. Lately, he has helped move electrical cables and gas pipelines underground.
Sharma added that “Satpal is the only Congress leader who can give Kaushik a tough fight.” However, Kaushik will also face challenges. “People are not happy with the way projects like Amrit Ganga, Namami Ganga and underground wiring have been done,” said Bhupatwala resident Ratan Mani Dobhal.
