A huge oil rig in the Persian Gulf will be transformed into an 800-room hotel and theme park.
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund has unveiled plans for its latest tourist attraction called The Rig – a series of connected platforms that span 150,000 square meters.
“This project is a unique attraction (…) which is expected to attract tourists from all over the world, while being particularly popular with citizens and residents of GCC countries in the region,” PIF said during the unveiling of the project. this week-end.
A promotional video showed footage of the theme park’s water slides built on the former oil rig and a steel and glass hotel atrium at the center of the attraction.
The site will have berths for 50 yachts as well as “three hotels, world-class restaurants, helipads and a range of adventure activities, including extreme sports”.
The FRP did not disclose The Rig’s location. Many of Saudi Arabia‘s oil platforms are clustered off the east coast town of Dammam.
No opening date was disclosed, with the PIF only stating that the project was part of its 2021-2025 strategy.
The Rig, which was announced on Saturday, is the latest tourism and entertainment project designed to reduce Saudi Arabia’s dependence on oil.
