TSC Subsea, a global specialist in developing advanced underwater inspection solutions for challenging situations, has designed another new remotely deployed tool. The ART vCaliper is specially designed to inspect ovality and wall thickness in tight spots.
This custom tool was designed and built by in-house engineers at TSC Subsea in less than four weeks to meet the precise requirements of a project in the Gulf of Mexico. A customer needed to perform ovality and thickness checks on a potential hot tap location on a pipeline from their semi-submersible platform.
Access to the hot tap inspection site was cluttered with pipes and clamps. This not only made it difficult to use standard scanners, but also posed a danger to divers.
To overcome the problem, TSC Subsea developed the ART vCaliper. It is an advanced, non-intrusive, remotely deployed inspection system that uses TSC Subsea’s field-proven Acoustic Resonance Technology (ART) for inspection.
The ART vCaliper is the only high-resolution inspection technology available that can actually penetrate a thick underwater coating and provide very precise and direct quantitative ovality measurements of wall thickness (down to a depth of ± 0.2 mm).
“There is nothing else like this currently on the market. ART is particularly suitable for underwater inspection because it eliminates the need for expensive coating and elimination of marine growth and enables high quality data to be obtained even in difficult situations ”, said David Parramore, Director of Engineering and Subsea Operations.
Requiring limited surface preparation and reducing vessel time, the ART vCaliper reduces operating costs. It interfaces easily with all common ROVs. It is lightweight and uses a motorless magnetic arc to attach to the pipe. And provides full 360 ° coverage around the pipe with easy handling by an ROV.
The tool features two transducers 180 ° apart, which collect data simultaneously with a minimum collection of three readings for ovality.
The current design scope allows an inspection of 6 to 20 inches and can be easily designed for any required diameter.
The ART vCaliper has been deployed to the Gulf of Mexico with MagCrawler which uses ACFM® technology to perform a combined caliper, wall thickness and weld inspection in a single run.
